Photo calendars

A calendar is a conventional time reckoning, accepted in a particular culture. It divides time into periods of repetitive cycles, associated with the cycles of nature. The name comes from the Roman word “calends“, other sources give the different origins of the word – Latin “callendarium“.

Calendars can be divided into different types, depending on:

1. a method of determining the length of the year concerning the length and the number of months.

This is the most popular classification criterion.

• Solar calendars, for example: Christian calendars (Gregorian and Julian), Mayan calendar, Aztec calendar, Iranian calendar, French Republican calendar, Swedish calendar
• Lunar calendars, for example: Ancient Greek calendar, Roman calendar, Babylonian calendar, Jewish calendar, Muslim calendar,
• Lunisolar calendars, for example: Egyptian calendar, Indian calendars, the Chinese calendar

2. a method for determining the beginning of the reckoning of time (era):

• Linear – the years are counted continuously from a historical event, for example since the birth of Christ (Gregorian calendar), the escape of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina (Muslim calendar)
• Cyclic – where years are in repeated cycles, for example in a 12-year or 60-year cycle (eg. Chinese calendar, Mayan calendar).

3. a method of determining the beginning of a new day (sunrise, sunset, moonrise, north, south) and counting the length of the day and hour.

Currently, the most widely used calendar in the world is the Gregorian calendar – introduced on 15th October 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. It’s based on the length of the tropical year.
